Introduction

Today, we set foot on a land at the junction of four worlds.

This incredible place lies at the business, branding, sales, and marketing crossroads.

Naming is the theater of dreams. This is where words are born. Sometimes, they mean nothing at all, yet have left their mark on the minds of entire generations.

Air Jordan, Nike, Action Man, Barbie, Hot Wheels, Monopoly...

All these names are now part of the collective consciousness. And all these names follow rules that make them easier to remember.

That’s what we’re going to look at here. How to create names that stain.

Why name things?

We can name anything and everything.

We can name our children, our company pets, our green plants...

We name things for two simple reasons:

It’s as simple as that.

If nobody had given Siri or Alexa a name, it would be much harder to turn off the lights to watch Netflix. We’d have to say, “Hey, Apple’s robotic personal assistant, please turn on Netflix & Chill.“

If Apple didn’t have a name, we’d have to say, “Hey, robotic personal assistant from the company that makes lots of tech products, including smartphones with three cameras that look like a hob; rock out Netflix & Chill, please.“
